Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the Civic Type R deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. The Civic Type R’s side airbags will shut off if a child is leaning against the door. The Integra’s side airbags don’t have smart features and will always deploy full force.

Both the Civic Type R and the Integra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda Civic Type R is safer than the Acura Integra:

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety does 40 MPH moderate front offset crash tests on new cars. In this updated test, results indicate that the Civic Type R is safer than the Integra:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Honda Civic Type R is safer than the Acura Integra:

Side impacts caused 23% of all road fatalities in 2018, down from 29% in 2003, when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety introduced its side barrier test. In order to continue improving vehicle safety, the IIHS has started using a more severe side impact test: 37 MPH (up from 31 MPH), with a 4180-pound barrier (up from 3300 pounds). The results of this newly developed test demonstrates that the Honda Civic Type R is safer than the Integra:

The Honda Civic Type R achieved a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2026 model year. This recognition was based on its impressive performance in the small overlap frontal crash test, updated moderate overlap front crash test, updated side impact crash test, headlight evaluations, pedestrian crash prevention testing, and vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention testing. The Integra is not a “Top Safety Pick” for 2026.

Warranty

There are almost 4 times as many Honda dealers as there are Acura dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Civic Type R’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Honda vehicles are better in initial quality than Acura vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda above average in initial quality. With 19 more problems per 100 vehicles, Acura is rated below average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Acura vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Honda above average in long-term dependability. With 1 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Acura is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Acura vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda fourth in overall reliability. Acura is ranked 7th.

Engine

The Civic Type R’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 115 more horsepower (315 vs. 200) and 118 lbs.-ft. more torque (310 vs. 192) than the Integra’s standard 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder.

As tested in Motor Trend the Honda Civic Type R is faster than the Acura Integra (manual transmissions tested):

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Civic Type R gets better fuel mileage than the Integra Type S 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder 6-speed Manual (22 city/28 hwy vs. 21 city/28 hwy).

Transmission

To facilitate fast shifting and allow the driver to focus on the road, the Civic Type R has a standard up-shift light to indicate when the engine is approaching redline. The Integra doesn’t offer an up-shift light.

The Civic Type R’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Integra doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Civic Type R’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Integra:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Civic Type R has larger tires than the Integra (265/30R19 vs. 215/50R17).

The Civic Type R’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 30 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Integra’s standard 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Civic Type R has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the Integra.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Civic Type R is 1.8 inches wider in the front and 1 inch wider in the rear than the average track on the Integra.

The Civic Type R handles at 1.04 G’s, while the Integra A-Spec Technology pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Civic Type R executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.7 seconds quicker than the Integra A-Spec Technology (24.5 seconds @ .76 average G’s vs. 27.2 seconds @ .63 average G’s).

Chassis

The Civic Type R is 4.9 inches shorter than the Integra, making the Civic Type R easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Civic Type R is quieter than the Integra Type S (88 vs. 89 dB).

Passenger Space

The Civic Type R has 3.2 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Integra (99 vs. 95.8).

The Civic Type R has .7 inches more front headroom and .7 inches more rear headroom than the Integra.

Ergonomics

The Civic Type R’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Integra does not have an oil pressure gauge.

If the windows are left open on the Civic Type R the driver can close all of them at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Integra can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Civic Type R has a standard rear wiper. The Integra doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The Civic Type R’s headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the Integra’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”

The Civic Type R has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning is only available on the Integra A-Spec Technology/Type S.

With standard voice command, the Civic Type R offers the driver hands free control of the radio, climate controls and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The Integra doesn’t offer a voice control system.

Compared to traditional radio, the Honda Civic Type R’s standard SiriusXM satellite radio provides an unmatched listening experience. Its extensive coverage guarantees consistent, crystal-clear reception across the continental U.S., and access to over 100 channels dedicated to a multitude of genres, including music, news, sports, talk shows, and comedy, many with only limited commercial breaks. Satellite radio is only offered on the Integra A-Spec Technology/Type S.

Recommendations

Car and Driver performed a comparison test in its September 2023 issue and the Honda Civic Type R won out over the Acura Integra Type S.

The Civic was chosen as a Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 2025 and 10 more times in the last 42 years. The Type S hasn’t been picked since 2024, and the Type S has only been chosen once.

A group of representative automotive journalists from North America selected the Civic as the 2025 North American Car of the Year. The Integra was last chosen in 2023.

The Honda Civic outsold the Acura Integra by almost 12 to one during 2025.
